16 more terai martyrs declared

Kathmandu, 30 March: Sixteen more persons killed during the terai movement were declared martyrs by the cabinet Tuesday.
NSP, a party from the terai, had threatened to boycott Tuesday’s cabinet meeting.

Scheduled HLPM committee meeting postponed

Kathmandu, 30 March: Following a decision of the Maoist standing committee Tuesday the main opposition should get the leadership of the high-level political mechanism (HLPM), its scheduled meeting wasn’t held Tuesday.
Maoists sent the party decision to Nepali Congress and UML, two other parties represented in the mechanism.
Maoists demanded leadership following the death of Girija Prasad Koirala who was its coordinator.
Nepali Congress has also demanded leadership while UML suggested the leadership should be rotated.

Cabinet decides to form industrial security force

Kathmandu, 30 March; The cabinet Tuesday decided to launch an industrial security force after business leaders threatened to handover keys of industrial units saying they felt insecure.
Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal met a FNCCI delegation before the cabinet meeting succumbing to business demand.

OHCHR mandate not be extended

Kathmandu, 30 March: The mandate of OHCHR-Nepal that ends 6 June won’t be extended.
Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal told this to ambassadors of EU member states and USA at a meeting Tuesday.
The countries had been lobbying on behalf of the UN bodies.
OHCHR-Nepal mandate ends 6 June.
PM Nepal isn’t in favour of extending the mandate of UNMIN when it ends 15 May, a source said.

Teri farmers compensated

Kathmandu, 30 March: Government will compensate farmers of five terai districts Rs 200 million after their maize crop failed, Communication Minister Shanker Pokhrel said.
Farmers had planted fields with hybrid seeds.
Farmers demanded compensation after crop failure.
